ReQuotes: Descendants of the Sun ~ Episode One

Introducing ReQuotes - episode recaps via the medium of quotes.  I adore quotes and I like recapping, so nothing seemed more natural than to combine the two.  The catchy title is due to the genius of our Empress.  At the moment, Descendants of the Sun ReQuotes will probably go up every weekend.  I'm behind on the drama, so I'll be playing catch-up for a week or two.

Military Commander: Three North Korean special forces operatives crossed the DMZ military demarcation line.  They raided guard post 301 and took two of our soldiers hostage.  They are currently on strike.  It’s a provocation for the sake of provoking.  The first one to fire within the DMZ is in breach of the armistice agreement.  North Korea hopes to provoke us into firing so they can use it to negotiate a better deal in the upcoming six-party talks.  I dispatched Special Forces Team Alpha already.

Ahn Jung-joon (North Korean soldier): I don’t think you can kill me.  People in your country are conscious of the eyes of others.  So you can’t shoot first.  But we are different.
Shi-jin: We’ve been divided for 70 years but you still have a misunderstanding.  We are always ready to shoot first to keep the peace.

Shi-jin: I never interrupt my enemies when they are making mistakes.

Jung-joon: I was glad to see you, Yoo Shi Jin.
Shi-jin: I know you were.  But I don’t want to see you every year Senior Lieutenant Ahn Jung-joon.

Shi-jin: Big Boss to Command.  Team Alpha. It is all done.

Dae-young: Isn't the gun barrel straight?
Shi-jin: I don't know.  I can’t adjust the clip and zeroing.  This is useless.  Excuse me, can you adjust the clip?
Game stall manager: No, no!  You can’t play around with the gun.  This is the gun that Delta Force of the US used in a Desert war.  It’s different from what you played around with when you were in the army.
Seo Dae-young:  No it's not.
*cries of 'Thief!'*
Dae-young: He's coming this way.  Let me borrow this gun.
Shi-jin: Hey, we're off duty now.
Dae-young: This toy gun has a short effective range.  It would be about 5 meters.
Shi-jin: He’s about 10 meters away now.
Dae-young: 7 meters.
Shi-jin: 5 meters.  Now.

Shi-jin: *motions toward the stuffed animal next to Dae-young* Your girlfriend is very pretty.
Dae-young: I think she is my ideal type. Your girlfriend looks good, too.  *points to Shi-jin's bear*
Shi-jin: He is my fellow soldier.

Dae-young: I just feel bad for him.
Shi-jin: When you were his age did you do bad things a lot?
Dae-young: I made people do bad things.
Shi-jin: You were a main character in a noir film, and you made that poor boy a villain in a crime film.  You are cruel.

*phone rings*
Dae-young: Is it from Battalion?
Shi-jin: Yes it is. but not from our battalion.
Dae-young: Don’t answer the call
Shi-jin: I will.  I will answer it and call her here.  Be a man!  You should meet her and break up with her.
Dae-young: I will buy you dinner.  Steak.
Shi-jin: I get paid enough to buy my own dinner.
Dae-young: I will buy you 17-year-old whiskey
Shi-jin: 17-year-old?  It is minor.
Dae-young: I will set you up on a blind date.  My cousin works on a plane.
Shi-jin: Is she Air Force?
Dae-young: She is a flight attendant.  And she has many friends.
Shi-jin: Why didn’t you tell me about your cousin sooner?  *ignores the call*

Shi-jin: My goodness.  My stomach.  My stomach hurts.  I think it's my appendix.
Dae-young: It's the wrong side.
Shi-jin: Then it hurts over here.  goodness, why does it hurt so much?
Dae-young: Actually, it was the right side.

Shi-jin: You even carry a knife?  I can't let this slide.  This gang is good for nothing.  Let’s break this gang up.  Take out your knives and guns.  Bring it on.
Gang member: We have more people on our side.  Let's take out our knives.
Dae-young: That was uncalled for.
Shi-jin: I’m regretting now.  At least they don’t have guns.

Myung-joo: Where is the patient?
Mo-yeon: This is not your hospital, nor is he your patient.  It’s a funny thing, that there is always a man involved between us.

Dae-young: I had a change of heart.  I do not have the skills to explain the thing of the heart.

Shi-jin: Don’t I look like a horrible liar?
Mo-yeon: Murderers are usually amicable.
Shi-jin: That seems to be true.
Mo-yeon: It makes me feel scared if you take that seriously.  We're the only ones here.
Shi-jin: Don’t worry.  I always protect beautiful women, the elderly and children.  It’s a rule I live by. Mo-yeon: That’s a relief.  I fit among one of those categories.
Shi-jin: No, you don't.
Mo-yeon: I meant the elderly!

Mo-yeon: It looks like your wound opened up while you were fighting.  When did you get hurt?
Shi-jin: Mm, it's been a few days.
Mo-yeon: What happened?
Shi-jin: It happened while I was doing some labor. That's what soldier's do, some labor.
Mo-yeon: I see.  That is one odd unit.  It’s not every day you get shot while doing some labor.   This is a gunshot wound.
Shi-jin: Have you ever seen a gunshot wound?
Mo-yeon: I've never seen it in Korea, but I have when I volunteered overseas in Africa.
Shi-jin: Now that you mention it, this is a wound I got during the battle of Normandy.  The gunfire fell like the rain but I penetrated into the battle to save my comrade.
Mo-yeon: Was his name Private Ryan?

Shi-jin: Doctors don’t have boyfriends.  Too busy.
Mo-yeon: Soldiers don’t have girlfriends.  Too much hard work.
Shi-jin: Who will answer?

Shi-jin: Which do I look better in, this or this?
Soldier 1: Let's see the right one again.
Dae-young: Who are you dressing up for?
Shi-jin: I’m going to Haesung Hospital to get my wound cleaned.
Soldier 2: We have a clinic here but he insists on driving 90 minutes to the hospital.
Shi-jin: Aww, shut it.  Healthy people make a strong nation.  At Haesung Hospital they have the best staff and equipment so I can recover quickly and protect my nation.
Soldier 1: Ahhhh, I see.
Dae-young: The doctors there must be pretty.

Shi-jin: Listen.  You’re about to swap curiosity with your life.

Shi-jin: If you’re going to get into trouble, make sure I don’t find out.

Mo-yeon: Did you take the medicine?
Shi-jin: Does it hurt more if I don’t?  Will I have to get admitted?

Shi-jin: Sorry, but I have to stand you up this time.
*helicopter coming*
Mo-yeon: There must be an emergency
Shi-jin: No.  It's here for me.
Mo-yeon: Why?  Is there a war?
Shi-jin: There is always a war, but not in Korea at the moment.
Mo-yeon: Then why would a helicopter come for you?
Shi-jin: I’ll explain some other time.

Soldier: Where are we?
Shi-jin: Afghanistan.
