Due to an unfortunate lack of time, this is a one-time ReQuote. Pied Piper so far, however, is just too good not to share at least the first episode. :)
"To the man who got rid of the raging rat infestation, the lord of the castle in Hamelin and the other officials, rather than granting the promised reward, punished him instead. So the man who was kicked out of the castle played his pipe again. All the village children who heard the music were enchanted by it and started to follow it."
*picture book ignites, and the sound of whistling takes the place of a child's voice*
Joo Seong-chan: "I'm going out to war. The least you can do is give me enough ammunition, Chairman."
...
Chairman: "You said it yourself: if you can't negotiate a deal, then even if God came, He wouldn't be able to either. It's up to you how many people you rescue with that money. Just try to give the impression that the company did all it could."
Joo Seong-chan: A negotiation starts with getting a good grasp of exactly what I and the opposing party want. It's easiest to face an opponent who doesn't know what he really wants. Some opponents want you to show emotions like good will or friendship or trust. But actually, you can give that anytime, because that is free. The problem is that, in most situations, both sides getting what they want almost never happens. Win-win is a lie that was made up by idealists. Then the way to do it is to make the opponent accept my proposal, whether he wants it or not. To make him believe on his own that he wants it. Or to make him want something that he didn't want. That is the nature of my negotiations.
Joo Seong-chan: "If there's anything else that you need, I can do it for you. I'm a man of my word."
terrorists: "Kill him!" "Kill him!"
Joo Seong-chan: "Yes, you may. Then why do you hold the trigger? Do you know why? It's because you're a businessman. If you kill me and take the money, the deal ends here. But think about it. Next time you kidnap someone, you're going to be notorious for killing the negotiator and taking the money. Then who's going to make a deal with you? Right?"
Team Leader Oh: "Let's live. Let's live and get through and bear this wretched world together. When cooking rice in a rice cooker, there are times when it tastes good and times when it doesn't. You might get really angry and feel wronged and enraged and start to boil inside. This is the point at which the wretched clogged rice cooker is about to explode. Like this here." *points to slide show of the lesson on negotiation* "Letting the air out of this rice cooker, that is our job."
Team Leader Oh: "To be honest, I didn't want you to veer from the wide and straight road to the narrow and crooked one."
Yeo Myeong-ha: "I'll decide which path I'll take. And to me, the path that Team Leader Oh is walking seems the coolest."
reporter: "It is known that the ransom sum was purported to be quite big. How much did you actually give in exchange for the hostages?"
Joo Seong-chan: "When a child cries and throws a tantrum, do you know what happens if you buy them everything they want? They continue having bad behavior."
reporter: "Are you saying that you didn't pay the ransom for all five of them, right?"
Joo Seong-chan: "If you give them everything they ask for, the culprits will target many more potential hostages. Why? Because that would be easy business. But what I did was change that to tough business."
reporter: "One person's life could have been sacrificed-"
Joo Seong-chan: "That's right. That one person could have been me. But I went to rescue. Although one person was sacrificed, I rescued the four surviving people. Why couldn't I bring Jeong Chan-ho back? It's because I'm not a god."
reporter: "Did you collect his body?"
Joo Seong-chan: "What I know is that due to fear of an outbreak, the hostage takers buried the body. For the fact that I wasn't able to rescue the person before, and the fact that I wasn't able to recover the remains, I apologize to his bereaved family, to K Group, and to our citizens. Rest in peace."
reporter: "Is that apology sincere?"
Joo Seong-chan: "You taught me this, Chairman. Do not even offer flattery for free."
Joo-eun: "How can someone know and do everything that I want? That was comfortable and nice."
Joo Seong-chan: "There's a mood to today's weather isn't there? Let's take our time to talk about it on a drive later."
Joo-eun: "But why is it that I don't really know what kind of person Joo Seong-chan is? I know what you're afraid of. But don't be."
Joo Seong-chan: "What are you talking about? What am I afraid of?"
Joo-eun: "In your world, everything is give and take, and there is no relationship that isn't that way. That way you won't be shaken by anyone and you can objectively negotiate then. Because you have to be able to turn your back whenever you need to. But even though I can't give you anything, or even though I can't prove anything, someone who trusts you, someone who is willing to risk their life for you, don't you need at least one person like that?"
Team Leader Oh: "Yeah, let's see some of your expensive high-tech toys."
Team Leader Han: "If possible, please return the equipment without a scratch."
Joo Seong-chan: "Let's change the rule. One person every ten minutes. I'll choose a person to live. Send the child out first."
Hostage-surviver-turned-hostage-taker: "As expected, you're very good at negotiating. You should have used that skill for our situation."
Joo Seong-chan: "He's doing that because he's frustrated his brother died during the negotiation. His target is me."
Team Leader Han: "If it's because of his resentment towards you, then the chance he'll spring the bomb in front of you vs doing so without your presence, which is bigger? Since you're an expert, you should know that much."
Joo Seong-chan: "Life or death, I said that I would go! My girlfriend is in there, too!"
Team Leader Han: "That's even more reason you can't do it. Several lives, including your girlfriend's, are at stake. No matter how skilled a cardiothoracic surgeon you are, you can't perform heart surgery on your own family."
telephone voice: "One victim. Could you say the same thing if that one person was someone you love?"
Joo Seong-chan: "Then should i have let the remaining four die? You tell me what I should have done!"
telephone voice: "Fine, you're saying to the very end that you made the right decision. Thanks to that, your woman remains behind alone getting ready to die."
Joo Seong-chan: "Put her on. Let me say a few words."
telephone voice: "Don't try to pull a fast one. I know all about the SWAT team making their move. There are TV cameras around, right?"
Joo Seong-chan: "Joo-eun hasn't done anything wrong. Please. Please!"
telephone voice: "Whether the remaining hostage will end up a survivor or a victim depends on your choice."
Joo Seong-chan, kneeling before a camera: "I'm not a hero. Rather, I'm a con artist and a scammer who cheats. Out of the $5 million ransom demanded by the kidnappers for five people, K Group from the very beginning supplied only $1 million, the price of just one person's life. Chairman Seo Geon-il said it didn't matter how many I rescued with that money. He said that all I had to do was to plant the image that the company had done all they could. The maximum number of people I judged I could save with that money was four. But the premise was that the kidnappers, angered by the small amount of ransom money, would kill one of the hostages. That was the negotiating strategy I set up before entering the criminal's base However, even if I were to go back to that scene, there could not be a better outcome than that. If there was one thing I missed, it's that rather than the terrorist, I should have first persuaded the company...no, the Chairman, that your employees are not numbers, but living persons. Each and every one was a person with family anxiously waiting for them."
...
telephone voice: "You still don't know what you did wrong."
Joo Seong-chan: "You...Who are you?!"
telephone: *eerie whistling*
